Our Mexican Holiday
When I was a little
girl I used to dream about traveling to exotic places around the world.
So when I was old enough that was at the top of my list! I had thought
about traveling to Mexico to see the places I'd seen in the movies and
on TV - they all looked so ... well, Mexican!
On May 30th, 2006
Todd arrived home early from work and announced, "Let's go to Mexico".
Now this may seem like an exotic statement but when you can, literally,
see a Mexican City from your bedroom window it's not quite such a momentous
declaration.
So off we went!
It took us 10 minutes to drive to the border because the majority of the
way the speed limit is 25 mph. We parked the car this side of the border
and walked over the bridge. The weather wasn't too hot and since it was
a week day there weren't a lot of others walking across the bridge.
It was a very quick
trip - we knew what we wanted to get and I just wanted to take a look
around at what is available over there. There are so many wonderfully
colourful pots and ceramics that I will definitely be going back there
during our stay here. We picked up a few things, Todd was in his element
haggling, looked around a few shops and then turned back and headed home!
I did get delayed
just a tad coming back into America as for some unknown reason (?!?!)
the Immigration didn't have my new citizenship on their file. They still
had me down as a permanent resident. However, after asking a few questions,
showing a few papers and talking to the people involved, it was all sorted
out and we all left happy.
All-in-all we were
gone just under three hours. It was perfect.
So here are a few
of the photos I took. Hopefully we'll be going back there soon and I'll
get a few more. I'd love to take some of the colourful ceramics and just
the city itself.

This is where we parked the
car to walk on over to Mexico for a few hours of quick shopping

I never realised I'd actual WALK to Mexico but following behind something
this sexy definitely adds a bit of excitement to the prospect of a walk
in hot weather!!

Getting a bit closer with every step - and then there's this sign ...
with one more step I'll be in Mexico for the first time in my life!! Isn't
it exciting?!?!

Somehow when I'd heard about the Mexican border being the Rio Grande I
thought it would be a little more ... well ... Grand! There's more 'Grande'
in the Cafe Late at the local coffee shop!! This is the Rio Grande - the
offical border!

I just took the one photo of the street we walked down. One way - I take
it!! There were shops either side of the street with LOTS of street vendors
just waiting to jump out and drag you into their shops!!

This is another photo of the street we went up! We went there during lunch
hour so I think this is rush hour! We didn't try any of the local cuisine
but we've been told of several places to go for really great Mexican food!
Whatever will they think of next - eating Mexican food in Mexico?!?!

Heading back to America after our whirl-wind tour of Mexico. He kept asking
me where the fish were, but I think the only fish in there were floating
on the top - tummies upward!!

Okay - so we're walking across the bridge, we're back in America (you
can tell - on the Mexican side of the bridge the 'metal grating' is metal
- on the Mexican side it's plastic?!?! Go figure?!?! Anyway - so we're
walking across the bridge and I look back at the Rio Grande and I see
these two people on the river banks! Can they be some homeless people
just taking a dip (and there were quite a few homeless just in the little
bit we saw) or perhaps this is my first glimpse of 'Wetbacks'?!

I always said I'd follow this man to the ends of the earth ... now I want
to know if Mexico is counted as the ends of the earth, if it is then I've
done my bit ... and looking to so much more! That's the American border
up ahead!
